Success Stories: Organic Farmers Share Their Experiences with Beauveria bassiana and Thrips Control

Organic Farmers Share Their Experiences

Labelling on organic farms being established as sustainable yields increase more farmers are turning to organic agriculture to combat pests such as thrips. Join us this month in the first of our success story specials: An examination of why the tiny creature known as Beauveria bassiana is revolutionizing the field of pest elimination. From vegetable gardens to commercial farms and agricultural towns, farmers are using this environmentally friendly method to share harvest success stories.

From a small greenhouse farmer to a large-scale organic farming operation, thrips are perhaps one of the toughest acting pests. These plant sucking pests cause losses to producers owing to their ability to reduce crop yields and quality through feeding on leaves, flowers and fruits. But now, fighting against thrips does not necessarily involve using synthetic pesticides again. Enter Beauveria bassiana, the natural fungi-based pesticide organic farmers and agricultural experts are calling the real deal.

The Hero of Organic Pest Control: Beauveria bassiana

In case one has no idea what it is, though, then bassiana beauveria is an entomopathogenic fungus which means that interactively it kills insects. Thoroughly, spores of this fungus stick to the skin of thrips or other pests, develop into a mature stage and destroy their host. It is also unique that this active ingredient impacts the pests in question while excluding advantageous insects – pollinators and the environment which surrounds them.

The example of Beauveria bassiana which is used to accomplish it is a microbial pesticide of the organic type above. It has been recently hitting the agricultural circles as it is an environmentally friendly way of tackling thrips.

Dr. Ram Gupta, a leading agricultural scientist, explained the science behind it: Bavaria WP comprises Beauveria bassiana spores belonging to the Entomopathogenic fungi that affect the insect body surface. After penetration, the fungus develops internally, which results in the pest management technique as specific as it can be effective for organic agriculture.” With such directed activity, the product eradicates thrips and, at the same time, does not contribute to the development of pesticide resistance, which is characteristic of various chemicals.

Farmers Speak: Where and how organic practices are continuing to prosper with Bevaria WP

In this capacity, I was able to interview at least three certified organic farmers within the region who have employed the use of Beauveria bassiana to manage thrips. Listening to these people gives one an idea of the levels of effectiveness of this natural remedy.

  1. Suraj Malhotra, Organic Vegetable Grower

Suraj has his own successful organization farming organically produced tomatoes, cucumbers and bell peppers in Haryana. As is the case with many growers, he fought with thrips, which caused considerable harm to the crop and decreased its productivity. He also added that the infestation of thrips had drastically reduced after changing to Bavaria WP.

Oh, the beauty of Beauveria bassiana is that it enabled me to pin down thrips in a natural way without azzacking beneficial insects such as these bees. Before, I was actually using chemicals such as the chemical pesticides but they always had some effects. When it comes to Bavaria WP though, the thinking is not the same. Thanks to this technology, my farm is healthier now, and the customers are sure that the vegetables they are buying are really organic, Suraj said.

  1. Priya Nair working to Greenhouse Operator in Kerala

Priya, the specialist in greenhouse, who grew exotic flowers was a victim of the thrips attack for years. and when she had tried all the chemical pesticides that she could lay her hands on, she resorted to using Bavaria WP.

Initially, I had some doubts, because it is not a readily effective knockdown product similar to the synthetics. But in a week of spraying I realized that wherever I sprayed thrips were fading off. The advice was simple – for Bavaria WP, the pests needed to be sprayed for 7-10 days depending on the infestation. After that, it has become my most favorite product, and I wanted to know how it promotes organic farming practice ,”Priya elaborated.

  1. Maharashtra – Community Cooperative

In Maharashtra, a cooperative of turmeric farmers in transition to organic farming had all adopted Bavaria WP together. While focusing on Beauveria bassiana as their pesticide to quarantine and control thrips, they have obtained excellent performance and remained loyal to the philosophy of environmentally friendly farming.

This is well illustrated by one farmer who said; “We have discovered that Beauveria bassiana is most effective when used with other farming practices”. Crop rotation, proper on-site soil management, and proper field sanitation has improved its optimum yields. After using it we get to mitigate thrips and again conserve the environment for the future generation.

How to control thrips organically?

To use a more enhanced pest management programme, the agriculturalists recommend the pesticides for thrips control. Here’s what they recommend:

  1. Scout and Monitor Regularly: It is important to try identifying the thrips at the early stages. You should use Bavaria WP the moment you see signs of them, Use it the moment you set eyes on them!!!! The advantage of this method is that it’s more effective when the pest population is low.
  2. Environmental Management: Thrips are pests that are known to affect crops which prefer hot and dry environments. The best ways of minimizing these fungal spores among the plants are by maintaining proper humidity and less stress on the plants.
  3. Consistent Application: In order for Beauveria bassiana to be effective the following should be followed with regards to the product application. Spraying should be done about every 7-10 days to ensure spores stay viable.”
  4. Tank Mixing: Bavaria WP works well with other organic remedies including neem oil but does not mix it with chemical fungicides which may eliminate the spores.

An Eco-Friendly Revolution in Agriculture

As it can be seen agriculture is today facing the reality of having to adopt new ecological approaches of farming and pest control and here is the real power of Beauveria bassiana. Thus, Bavaria WP protects the yields of organic farmers from pests and diseases, as well as strengthens their years-long stand for the responsible attitude to the planet.

As Dr. Arvind Joshi, a microbial agriculture expert, aptly summed it up: It’s for this reason that solutions such as Bavaria WP are the future of farming. They offer excellent pest control in equal measures to conventional chemical based methods but with a lot less intervention on the bio-diversity of the crops with least chemical inputs. Nets overlooking them feeding them were all sustainable farms what a sustainable farm should look like.

As you may be wondering how to deal with thrips without resorting to chemical control, the answer could just be in Beauveria bassiana. In my conversation with these farmers, however, it becomes obvious that Bavaria WP is not so much a product as it is a call for change towards environmentally sustainable and healthy farming. It is high time we come on board and support this revolution that is one organic crop at a time!

Are you ready to let Bavaria WP in your fields? This may well be your next success story. More great stories of sustainable farming are just around the corner!
